"Our crime is to live on the streets, our cirme is that we are poor. Should we pay with our lives? We would like to sleep on clean sheets and have warm blankets. We would like to play and have fun. We would like to go to school. Aren't these things you give to your own precious children? Well, we are your children, too, because we are the children of Brazil".

"I was born a Black woman

They turned me into a white man
The castrated me, they wouldn't
let me go

But I'm not going to accept this
I'm going to shout, let my voice
cry out and make myself free
So I can continue to be a Black
woman".
Benedita daSilva

"Women have been the most exploited... We get up at three in the morning to prepare corn for our husband's breakfast and we don't rest unitl late at night. If there is not enough food we give it to our children and our husbands first. So the women now have decided to take up arms and become Zapatista".
